Educational Opportunities


Trying to decide where to take your class field trip this year? Consider The Texas Zoo! We offer  a variety of educational programs designed for that will make this year’s field trip an experience  your students will not forget. All of the Educational Programs offered at The Texas Zoo are TEKS and STAAR aligned.


Educational Field Trip Programs: When your school books a field trip (Aug-May) to The Texas Zoo they will receive a 30 minute educational Assembly Program (Included with admission), which focuses on the difference between mammals, birds, and reptiles. Students will also have the chance to see some of our animal ambassadors. This program can accommodate 120 students at a time.

Available Additional Programming (Not Included In Admission):

Explorer Class (Max 35 student per class): When you book the additional Explorer Class your group will receive a 45 minute hands-on classroom based lesson on one of the following topics.



Life Cycles(K-5th)

Herbivore, Carnivore, Omnivore(K-5th)

Food Chains/Ecosystems(K-5th)

Educational Zooventure (Max 35 student per class): This program is an in-depth 2 hour experience designed and created for your students’ grade level and educational needs. Some examples include watersheds and hydrological cycles, wetlands, or interacting ecosystems.

Guided Tours (Max 35 student per tour): The Guided Tour at The Texas Zoo is a one hour front of scenes tour, guided by one of our education staff. This experience is a great way for larger groups to learn interesting facts about each animal in our collection. Pre-registration only.



 Can’t make it to the zoo? Let us come to you! The Texas Zoo offers a variety of different ways for your group to experience the Animal Kingdom without ever leaving your school.

Outreach Programs: Outreaches allow us to bring the Animal Kingdom into your classroom and include 4-6 live animals, biofacts and great information. Outreaches can be scheduled for assemblies, science nights, classroom visits and can be customized to fit a topic of your choosing. As we tailor each outreach to your needs prices vary – Give us a call to book yours today.

Zoo To You: The Zoo to You program is an in-class or after school program that is one hour a week for four weeks. Zoo to You participants will experience the Animal Kingdom through live animal encounters, activities, and creative design.

Discovery Boxes: Choose one of our various educational boxes to rent by the week and bring the excitement of the animal kingdom to your classroom. Each box contains educational activities, animal artifacts, and an educational video to match the theme of the box. The boxes we have available for rent are:

Mystery Dinner Theatre:  Look at the animal artifacts to figure out which animals ate the food in the zoo’s kitchen.

All About Beaks and Feet:  Use the items within this box to learn how beaks and feet birds have adapted for what they eat and where they live.

Feathers, Fur and Scales:  Use the items within this box to teach your students about the differences between birds, mammals and reptiles.

Design your own box:  Want to rent a Discovery Box but can’t find one that suits your needs? Let our Education Staff know and we can collaborate to create a Discovery Box just you!



Native Texas Traveling Exhibit:  For larger or special events, we can bring our Traveling Native Texas Exhibit to you. This exhibit features several of our Zoo Ambassadors and allows visitors to learn about and get a closer look at some of the wildlife that can be found in their backyard like Ocelots, Coyotes and more. Join us for ZooSquad, A program designed for your Homeschooler (Ages 4-12 Years). ZooSquad will meet on the second of Monday every month (excluding summer months) at 10:30am for an exciting science filled afternoon at the zoo. Pre-registration is required. Parents and Guardians must be present during the program. Parents are not required to pre-register. Registration closes at noon the Sunday before the event.

Tuesday is ZOOSDAYS!

Join us for Zoosdays, a weekly educational program designed for your preschool aged child (ages 2-5). Our adventures through the animal kingdom depart every Tuesday (August through May), promptly at 10:00am. Every Zoosday will focus on a specific animal; include an animal related activity or craft and possible animal encounter. Zoosdays are free with admission to The Texas Zoo. Parents and Guardians must be present during the program.







Come to the Zoo from 1:30-3:00pm on select Sundays where we give the girl scouts a unique opportunity to earn a badge, have some fun and possibly meet an animal. Space is limited. Pre-Registration is required! Registration closes at noon the Thursday before the event.  Zoo Admission is not included in the program fee.
